Connecting from regionale train to italo versus freccia

Hi there,

We are a group of 6 (2 moms, 2 teens, 2 kids) travelling from lucca to Roma on July 1. While I can't book the lucca-Firenze portion now, I'd like to book a discounted Firenze-Roma now.

Is there any advantage/disadvantage connecting to either the freccia or Italo trains from a regionake - further distance etc? We will all have carryons wheeled suitcases, but I am trying to make it as simple, yet cost effective as possible.

Unsure of the station layout and if certain trains are assigned certain groups of tracks. Thanks

And as FYI we are staying near the Spanish steps in Roma and will probably grab a taxi (or 2) from either Rome station.

You don't want to take a regional train all the way to Rome. It'll take you about 3 years to get there. The advantage of transferring to the Freccia Rossa or Italo is that the trip from Florence to Rome takes less than two hours. When you get to SMN in Florence, just walk to the head of the track, turn towards the right and you'll find the TAV (fast) trains around the center of the station. They don't usually announce departure tracks until just a few minutes before the train leaves so you'll join the throngs of other people waiting by the timetables, waiting to sprint.

For what it's worth, I am a big fan of Italo. The staff is helpful and sharp, the trains are snazzy and clean - the whole experience is a few steps above and beyond Trenitalia.

Thanks Eugene. Definitely connecting to a fast train! Will probably go with italo as the schedule and prices work best for us.
