Did you check the distance between Florence and Civitavecchia on a map or on www.viamichelin.com? It's 285 Kilometres, more or less.

An high speed train to Rome and then a cab would save you a lot of money. Otherwise you could rent a car and save some money.

Hundreds and hundreds of euros - You should take the fast train from Firenze S M Novella to Roma Termini (takes 1.5 hours) and then train to the port or, if you want a taxi or car service from Rome to the port, which I believe is about 100 euros (give or take, you would need to check).

www.trenitalia.com - click on the little UK flag and then put in a low number like 6 to see a full day's trains schedule.
