This depends on where you've planned to stay before traveling to Venice. Travel either from Florence or from Milan to Venice isn't a problem: both trips do not last long and trains are at least one every hour. The trip takes 2:35 from Milano, 2:05 from Florence.
Rather, the most important tip is to buy your tickets as soon as possible, in order to find any discounted rates:
www.trenitalia.com, then click on UK flag (type "Milano Centrale", "Firenze S. M. Novella", "Venezia S. Lucia").
Please note also that if you wait you risk even to find some train full-up, given the date and the destination.
