Is the train trip from Venice very scenic?

Hi Folks,

Just what it says on the tin... :)

We'll be taking a train from Venice in March and I'm wondering how scenic it is and if we'd be missing anything if we take an evening train?

Thanks in advance!

You should take the day train. The Italian countryside is always pretty to look at with all the beautiful old hilltowns.

Actually, this particular journey is not very scenic. From Venice to Bologna is across the flat plains of the river Po, with no hills and no hill towns, and from Bologna to Florence is mainly in tunnel.

How 'bout from Florence to Rome? That will be our next stop. :)

Florence to Rome isn't particularly scenic either. The most visual part of either segment is between Bologna and Florence, when not in a tunnel.

It may not be as scenic as some train trips, but I still intend to take the train from Venice to Rome again this year.

The train lines are not built to be scenic, but to be fast and reliable. The landscape is monotonous, but I myself find the beauty in the mundane. The train is the best way to travel regardless, but don't expect to be blown away from the view. In fact, if scenic is important to you, the slow local train from Rome to Pisa (along the coast) and from Pisa to Cinque Terre is a better bet. Loads of coast line to relish in. However, Rome-Pisa lasts for more than three hours (and only parts are pretty), Pisa-Cinque Terre lasts for a couple of hours (and only small parts are pretty).
