Driving from Sorrento to Florence

Hello

We are planning a 10 days trip to Sorrento, Florence and Tuscany.

We consider renting a car for the whole period.

Do you think it is possible to drive at one day from Sorrento to Florence?

I think it's 5 or 6 hours, and I'm afraid it's more difficult than it looks.

Btw I'm speaking about April 2014.

No problem, here is a recent pic showing a typical italian toll station on A18 motorway:

It's quite easy once you take the A1 motorway in Naples, it goes north all the way to Florence.

You can check route, driving times and costs on www.viamichelin.com

I hope you know that, as a visitor, you can't drive in central Florence and that hs trains link Florence and Naples going faster than any car.

www.viamichelin.com estimates that Sorrento-Florence will take 6 hours of driving (plus stops), mostly along very busy and boring motorway, at a cost of €32.80 in tolls and about €62 in fuel.

A train will take you from Naples to Florence in 2h50, at a cost of €29 each if booked well in advance. Even adding another hour to get from Sorrento to Naples, this is much faster than a car and much less stressful.

Do not even *think* of trying to drive into central Florence.

I spent a little while in Florence last year and all the vans and cars are tiny, the roads are only little!

I would not want to drive.

We are doing a bit of a tour and we are doing it by train, starting in Naples finishing in Venice
