Easiest/Cheapest way to travel from Florence to Nice, France

I'm studying abroad in Florence and my roommates and I want to take a weekend trip to Nice but looking up travel has been very confusing what would the train or flying be easier? whatever's cheap really would be the best. We would want to leave on a friday and come back sunday or monday.

Cheapest (for THIS weekend - you did not mention dates - €54 adult / €50 under-26, each way so €100-108 return) would be Eurolines bus (http://www.eurolines.fr/en/ or http://www.eurolines.it/Home/59-1-en.html), but I am not sure whether you would consider it as "best"! Friday departure from Florence is at 18:00 hrs arr. 23:59, and from Nice only on Sunday night/Monday morning at 02:00 hrs, arr. 08:00.

The bus departs from Autostazione SITA, Via Santa Caterina da Siena, 17, Florence (eurolines.it/Fermate-dei-pullman/647-1.html) and arrives in Nice at Gare Routière Internationale de Lindbergh - 175 boulevard René Cassin (near Nice airport) but 2 a.m. return is probably from Rue Costes et Bellonte, outside the bus station: you would have to check with Eurolines.

There are no flights from Florence or Pisa to Nice and quite apart from the cost, flying from anywhere else (e.g. Rome) is going to take too much time getting there and back, in addition to waiting at the airport.

The train, which takes at least 7 1/2 hrs, with several changes, ending with Ventimiglia (Vintimille SNCF on French Railways site) to Nice-Ville (48 mins, €7.50). You'd be travelling all day on Friday and Monday to have Saturday and Sunday in Nice.

If one of you is old enough to rent a car, that would be the easiest and fastest. Only about five hours each way, plus a rest stop. But it'll cost about €100 each way in tolls and fuel plus the rental charge.

The trains can actually be cheaper than the bus, with on-the day fares from €37.10, and slightly cheaper advance fares. But trains are even slower than normal at the moment, as the line is blocked by a landslide between Genoa and Ventimiglia so there's an additional change onto a slower substitute bus for part of that stretch.
