air travel to florence: Should we book to FLR or take train

Looking into airfares for our june trip. We'd like to go straight to Florence for about a week, then spend a few days in rome before flying home (to NYC or toronto). A couple of questions:

-we'd have to make a stop in Europe then connect to Florence. How much time do we need for the connecting flight?

-alternatively, we can fly direct to Rome, then take a train to florence

-someone in our party will be flying from Los Angeles. The same questions apply to her.

Thank you

Pros and cons?

Pros of flying to Florence: airport smaller and more manageable than FCO, you'll arrive close to your ultimate destination and not have to deal with unfamiliar city/train station all jetlagged. Connecting flights often cheaper from the US compared to direct flights, and of course you won't have to factor in train cost (likely purchased as walk-up fare). Foreign rail travel intimidates some people, whereas most travelers are familiar with air travel.

Cons: direct flights give less chance for something to go wrong (missed connection or lost luggage). Even with train will probably take no longer than connecting flight, less even, and I'd just assume travel by train than wait around an airport. Train is more comfortable than air travel.
