Florence - Pisa - Lucca

Some assistance if possible please

While on a trip to Florence I am trying to plan a day visiting Pisa and Lucca

Looking at the timetable Florence to Pisa looks easy but which station is it best to get off for the Tower? Pisa to Lucca looks simple but the return Lucca to Florence arrives at a different station to the one you depart from Firenze S M Novella how far is it from the Cathedral ?

Any advise would be appreciated

Whether on the Firenze-Pisa stretch and on the Lucca-Firenze one, the main station is the same: "Santa Maria Novella" ("Firenze S. M. Novella" in Trenitalia webpage listing).

In Pisa, the nearest station to the tower is "Pisa San Rossore"; but it's more practical to get off at "Pisa Centrale" (very frequent direct trains from Firenze), then take the bus "LAM rossa":

We did this in March. Took train from Florence to Pisa. Walked from the centrale station through town (stopped for a coffee). Toured the tower, church, baptistery and then took a bus from Pisa to Lucca. Bus stop is very close to the tower area. Later that day we took train back to Florence... got off at Santa Maria Novella. Great day.

I usually get the train from Florence to Pisa Centrale (because there are more trains to this station) walk the 20 min stroll across Pisa to the tower then walk 5 mins to Pisa San Rossore station which is on the Lucca line and then travel on to Lucca. Don't forget to validate your tickets in the little machine on the platforms before you get on the train and if you do choose to travel on to Lucca by bus you must also validate your ticket in the machine on the bus.
