Off the Beaten Track Ideas Livorno Area?

We will have one day on a cruise (for our 25'th wedding anniversary) in Livorno.

We have been to Florence and Pisa already.

There are things we would love to see again in Florence, but I was wondering if we should see something new, instead?

I have read a little about Lucca? What about Livorno itself?

We like lots of things - churches, site seeing nature, history.

We don't drink (but love coffee, cappuccino :))

We would love your ideas for other things to see either in addition to Florence, or instead of Florence.

Also, is renting a car in Livorno off the ship challenging?

I suggest you head to Lucca.

Here is what one of the Cruise Critic websites says about Livorno:

>>> the charmless city of Livorno (it was badly bombed during World War II) serves as a jumping-off point for day trips elsewhere. <<<

Happy Anniversary! Yes, yes....go to Lucca. Have coffee at Caffe di Simo, where Puccini took his coffee (have pastries, too). Stroll the streets and the walls. Go to the Botanical Gardens. Churches are cooler than most any place this time of year (when are you going?). Go to the museum associated (and right next to) with the Duomo. See the wonderfully-restored Lippi painting in San Michele church, Piazza San Michele. Shop on Via Filungo. Have a gelato every three blocks!

Make sure you take a map of the town and a gps. We were looking for the city wall which is apparently spectacular but couldn't find it using an iPhone and google maps and a map of Italy.

I understand that not everyone is technically challenged though!

If you like to eat, you perhaps make a serious mistake in not visiting Livorno. Admittedly, we are quite prejudiced when it come to this "charmless" town (all cards on the table). But you will never, ever get a better cacciucco (a seafood/mollusc stew) in the place where it was invented.

And walking around Little Venice is fun, as is touring Livorno's grand, daily market (if you like, we can tell you where to get the best fried doughnut/donut in town). If you like 19th-century art, you can taxi to the Giovanni Fattori museum.

Yes, Lucca is much more interesting, on just about every level. But we'd just toss in our 2cw and say that maybe hanging out in a town which is not full of visitors but, instead, full of colorful locals ... well, is all.

We are visiting Livorno in 2 weeks and staying for 2 nights (we are visiting Pisa & Florence separately).

I would love to know where you found the best donuts (my partner is a huge fan) and any restaurant recommendations.

We have 2 days to relax and explore Livorno so any recommendations are appreciated.

Hi k4te -

Then you and your partner will please hie to Antica Friggitoria, just outside the Mercato Centrale, at via del Cardinale 9, 0586/884 571). Head towards the outdoor fruit/veg stalls, and you'll find it on your right. You would alsio perhaps behoove yourselves to phone first, as in summer they keep freaky hours.

One of us usually buys his doughnut/donut there, and then takes himself next door for a superlative coffee -- caffe al vetro -- an odd, sort of Livornese thing. Apparently they like to drink their espressi in small glasses. Don't ask. If you stand outside, discretely, you can dunk that donut into gloriousness, and no one will think the worse of you.
