Whilst I would urge visitors not to buy everything in supermarkets as the local deli’s can be a delight and usually have better quality and selection of cold cuts its always useful to know where the supermarkets are for other supplies. Bear in mind Italian supermarkets don’t do frozen meat, (except in winter where my local Esselunga sells frozen wild boar and hare), the bread is usually average and much better from the numerous local bakeries. Make sure you enjoy using the local shops.
There are a number of supermarkets on the outskirts of the city and one small one inside the walls.
Inside the walls at Piazza del Carmine you will find a small branch of Sidis, its adequate is you don’t have a car/bike or fancy a walk outside and just want a few things.
There are four branches of Esselunga, who were retailer of the year in 2009;
viale Carlo del Prete, just outside the walls and an easy walk from the exit to the side of San Frediano Churc.
at the top of viale Castruccio Castracani, this is new and a bit of work in progess.
viale San Concordio, leave the city by the foot/cycle exit at the side of Baluardo Santa Maria. This is the best supermarket in Lucca and has a cycle path the whole way from the city walls, under the road and railway, right to the store.
There is a fourth store further out of town on the road to Marlia, useful if you are going towards the Garfagnana/Bagni di Lucca area.
Carrefour is at via SS Annunziata 278, in the San Marco district.
PAM is closer to the walls at via Armando Diaz, not far from Porta Elisa.
There are numerous other small shops that sell a multitude of things that some may consider supermarkets, but these are the big operations. Generally the supermarkets are closed in Sundays although they are open once a month, if Carrefour is open you will usually find PAM and the San Concordio Esselunga open as well.
You can check if the Carrefour is open on their website, go to Punti Vendita, put Lucca in the “province,citta,cap” section and the date in the drop down “aperture straordinarie” section.
