Venice to Lucca?

We are travelling around Italy during Oct, mainly by train and need to get from Venice to Lucca. Is this only possible by going through Florence?

You have to change trains in Florence: there are no trains that go from Venice to Lucca without a change. You can get train times and costs from www.trenitalia.it/homepage_en.html but it is unlikely you will be able to book through this site, as it seldom accepts cards issued outside Europe. If you have problems, just buy the train tickets in Italy.

Take picnic with you on train from Venice to Florence! Lots of Italians do. (And even if they didn't....) Food on train not great. Picnic can be: wine, bread, cheese, fruit, chocolate. Train will take at least three hours - no matter what the schedule says and this is a lovely time to nosh. We've never had difficulty finding the ingredients for a picnic close to the Venice train station.

You can do this journey more cheaply than going by Florence, by changing at Bologna and Prato, we've done this and it was all fine and smooth (with picnic of course!) When you look up the trains on trenitalia it will show the Eurostar via Florence, but on the bottom left you can click for 'other solutions' and get the cheaper regional and IC trains, the journey time is not that much more but the saving can be significant.
