Train from Livorno to Lucca

My husband and I are taking a cruise leaving from Venice with a stop in Livorno (Florence/Pisa). Instead of booking an excursion with the cruise line to either Florence or Pisa someone suggested we consider taking the train out of Livorno into the walled town of Lucca. We will be in port in Livorno for about 11 hours. Anyone every done this - how difficult would this be considering we will need to be back to the ship the same day. Any info will be appreciated, Tks.

It should be very easy to do. It's a little over an hour's train ride with a change of trains in Pisa from the central train station in LIvorno. That gives you a good chunk of time in Lucca. The are frequent trains.

Schedules can be found at:

It is a regional train so look at dates within the next 7 days to get sample times and fares.

Lucca train station is very close to the walls - five min. walk - and you will love this excursion. Just be sure to allow yourself a bit more time than you think you need to make your connections and get back to the ship.
