Suggestions for day trips from Lucca

We have rented a villa outside Lucca for a week in early July (mom, dad, 2 teens and one preteen). We plan to spend lots of time on foot and bikes in and around Lucca, but would also like to take 2 or 3 long day trips via car during the week. Florence will be one of them. I think our teen daughters will like a day at the beach. Any other thoughts on a couple of options that involve driving around an area where we can take in beautiful scenery, grab a great lunch and do some sightseeing/shopping? Most of our week will be relaxed, but we'd like a couple of days where we really pack in alot of activity. Thanks.

Do not drive into Florence unless you plan to see some other places along the way. Even then I'd find a place to park near a train station and take the train.

You might want to look at the Medici Villas around Florence or drive up into the Garfagnana valley. Not shopping places though.

Yes, the drive up the Garfagnana stopping at the Ponte della Maddalena and Barga is well worth it for the scenery. If you are going to have a car you need to know all about the limited traffic zones operated in just about all Italian urban settlements, including Florence and Lucca and I would second the advice not to drive to Florence, better to park at Lucca train station and catch the train. Read all about the zones here:

Another suggestion is the hill town of Volterra. Head out of Lucca on the SS439 towards Pontedera, go through here staying on the SS439 for appox 27km passing through La Sterza along the way and you will come to a left turning signposted Firenze/San Gimignano /Volterra which is the direction you want to take. There is an underground car park (outside of the ZTL zone) on the right just before you get to the main piazza.

We would NEVER drive to Florence but instead we love the drive through the Chianti region via Poggibonsi following the SS222 towards Castellina in Chianti where you will find beautiful scenery. It is a long drive but you can stop several times on the way. Or you could take the train to Sienna which is really beautiful and more compact than Florence. There are so many options with a car it sems a shame to waste time waiting to get into Florence and stressing over the traffic and parking. Re. the beach option it is only twenty or thirty minutes to Viareggio which is a busy seaside resort or a bit longer to Forte Dei Marmi which has a good market on Sunday and general market on Wednesday and some beautiful and expensive designer shops.

I would suggest to visit Cinque Terre http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/826

which offer a stunning landscape, and you can easily reach by train from Viareggio.

Thanks all for suggestions. We are driving out of Rome on a Sunday and I have one child who would love to stop in Pisa on our way to Lucca. Is this a simple option if we want to stop, have a late lunch, see the tower and arrive at our villa by early evening?
