Train or Bus to Lucca, where to pick up the rental car?

We are traveling to Italy in September. We arrive in Florence and plan to take a bus or train to Lucca where we will stay 3 nights. We will then move to Loro Ciuffenna where we will stay for a week. During this leg of the journey we plan to have a rental car. At the end of our stay we fly home from Florence. I have several questions.

1 - From the Florence airport is a Bus or Train to Lucca best?

2 - Should we return to Florence to rent the car or can we get a car in or near Lucca and return it in Florence?

3 - If we should get the car in or near Lucca, where is the best place? We plan to stay in the City Center.

Grazie

After staying a few nights in Lucca we rented a car from Avis. Their office is outside the city walls so we took a taxi there from our city centre accommodation. Be aware the rental office hours are Mon-Fri and Sat morning only. Florence airport offices are open 7 days a week.

Hi, just got back from italy , we did rent a car and I Don't recommend it!!!! Very, very stressful to drive around and we been around a few places in the world driving, but italy, I do not recommend it. Main reason, restricted zones, very hard to know where they start and end, signs are small, so basically, you need to know basic italian , we do a little bit and didn't help either,...and you need to know the ztl zones , wich are in every city. On top, they drive really fast, since they know their way, but for a tourist, it can ruin your vacation. We use the car on the country side, less stressful, still rather don't drive either, A lot of time we ended parking at train station s and using the train instead. We were on Lucca, Pisa, Florence, montecatini, Milan, lake como and Cinque Terre. I hope this will help you.

Not very realistic advice from Poster #4.

You absolutely NEED a car in Loro Ciuffenna.

ZTL's are well identified....commonly with a large wall.

Italian road signs are pictograms. Easy to follow.

Contact www.autoeurope.com to arrange your car rental.. CALL them....don't just look at the website.

They are a consolidator and they will get you the best deal and if you have any "issues" with your rental, they have 24 hour English speaking operators.

Their "operators" are excellent. They are located in Maine.

Make sure that you return your car at the Florence airoprt.

Hi, I can only comment on some of your questions having driven in Tuscany a few times and going back again on Saturday. Lucca is really easy to drive in- all one way with walled city in the middle; Pisa is pretty straightforward as well and you really need the car to see all the gorgeous Tuscan countryside. We went to Florence by train and parked at Lucca station- I would not want to drive in Florence!

Re cost of car hire, it is quite a bit more expensive to return to a different destination than you collect from .

Hope that is some help!!

You may want to read this article on driving in Italy and the ZTLs (Limited Traffic Zones) that operate in most towns and cities, some of which are camera enforced such as Lucca, Pisa, Siena and Florence:
