Parking in Lucca - for day trips and overnight to Florence

HI!

We will be staying about 1/2 hour north of Lucca with a car and will be going there for a day or two. And we will also be parking in Lucca and taking the train to Florence for an overnight trip.

Can anyone recommend the best lot from the list on this website that would be the best for both the day trips and the overnight trip to Florence? Are any of them free :-)

(Parking is listed on bottom half of page).

Thanks much!

Parking at Lucca train station (Parcheggio Stazione) costs 1 euro/hour from 08.00hrs to 20.00hrs and a flat night rate of just 1 euro, with a maximum daily rate of 10 euros. For visiting the city there is car park Carducci (Parcheggio Carducci) just off the ring road, again cost is 1 euro/hour from 08.00hrs to 20.00hrs with a maximum daily rate of 5 euros, there is also pay & display parking along the walls. Click on the highlighted name of the car parks in this link, it will show the exact location of each Parcheggio: http://www.metrosrl.it/en/tourist/map-tourist

Not sure if you're interested in free parking, but when we were in Lucca last month, we were pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to find some. Our rental home was within the walls, on the North "side" of town, so can only comment on my parking experience in that part of town.

First, the residential streets to the West of Parcheggio Piazzale Martitiri are where we found our spots. Streets "via Umberto Tinivella" and the intersections of "via Tagliate di San Marco & via Barsanti e Matteucci" is where we had the most luck. Look for white lines and double-check to see if you don't see a sign indicating that it is reserved for residents only - sometimes a very small section of a street is but there will be a sign indicating so.

Second, if that doesn't work, there is a huge (and free) parking lot North-West (i.e., about 10 o'clock) from the Parcheggio Piazzale Martiri. You can see it on the Google Maps image in the link you provided. It's always full of cars and I found it safe.

I realise that the train station is in the South part of town, but walking from the spots I mentioned to the northern pedestrian gate would take you about 5-10 minutes. You'd then by In Lucca... again, on the North end of town. Lucca is relatively small so in another 10-15 minutes, you could cross to the South end and be at the train station.

Also, why not consider taking your car directly to Florence? Florence is about 40 minutes away by car from Lucca. The toll is about $2 USD each way and Florence has quite a few parking lots just outside the historical centre (so you don't have to worry about entering a ZTL). We found it so much esier to go by car from Lucca then being tied to the train (or bus) schedule... and faster. It meant we could stay in Florence longer in the evenings, too, as the last bus back from Florence to Lucca is at 7 p.m. (not sure what the train is like).

The best parking we found in Florence was the Parcchegio Prato. It was easy getting to from the highway from Lucca and was about a 10-15 minute walk to the "start" of the historical centre by the train station. If you don;t want to walk, you can catch the tram that stops across the street from the parking garage (in 2 stops you'll be at the train station; about 3-4 minutes). Also, there are a couple of dozen free parking spots just before and after the entrance to the parking garage so you can try your luck with them, too.
