Leaning Tower of Pisa

I have read that only children aged 8 or over can climb the tower

We will be in Pisa for 1 day during a Mediterranean Cruise & our 7 year old son really wanted to do this

Does anyone know how strict they are about checking childrens ages?

I'm afraid it's a safety thing. Children under 8 are not allowed to the top of the Tower and minors between 8 and 18 need to be accompanied by an adult.
