Just stay in Rome. What you are thinking about involves 6+ hours of train travel and going to Florence for a couple of hours will be waste of your time.

IMO, trying to both is certainly not worth the 6+ hours of travel time, not counting the expense.

The fast train from Roma Termini to Firenze S.M. Novella station in Florence is 1.5 hrs., Pisa is an hour further by regional train, then a 15-20 min walk to the Field of Miracles (Tower).

If you went from Rome to Pisa by fast train its 2h45m, then a 1 hr. regional train to Florence and Florence back to Rome 1.5 hrs.

www.trenitalia.com will give you the schedules, to the top right click the British flag but use the Italian names for the stations. Note - the new schedules won't be loaded until June 8th, they won't change much tho.

If you're wanting a "day trip", head up (by train) to ORVIETO as that's doable and wonderful. I can't even comment on the plan to take "a day trip" from Rome to Florence and Pisa (and then back to Rome).

a day trip to Florence is IMHO unwise - Florence just needs several days to actually see the things it is famous for -- it is possible if you are selective and well organized -- a day trip that includes both Florence and Pisa is a total waste of time. you would be better off renting a video tape. it would be all logistics and no 'there there'

Back when I was a tour guide for, essentially, Trip to Rome......we would offer an optional day trip to Florence (by bus). We utilized the services of a local tour provider (very well organized and staffed with wonderful native guides) and it was very structured. Of course, the traveler only got a tantalizing whiff of Florence, but was thus inspired to book another product of ours.....Trip to Florence! The bus departed Rome VERY early in the morning ("Be on the bus at 7:00 a.m. or be left behind"!!) and arrived back in Rome late in the evening. I believe there to be companies in Rome, still, that offer this Day Trip to Florence. A recommendation by your concierge or other hotel staff for a particular tour would be good. Because you have the services of a guide for most of the day in Florence, you can gain entry to places of interest efficiently and in a "guided" manner - often passing lined-up individuals. Hitting the high spots, seeing the David, having a little time in one of the markets, seeing the Ponte Vecchio (and fighting the crowds if you wish), seeing the Duomo complex from the exterior and Santa Croce with the guide.....all this is possible in a day (keep up, keep walking, don't dawdle!!). It is certainly far from ideal, as mentioned above. If you feel you may have only this opportunity to get to Florence, go for it. Of course Florence needs more of your time....a lifetime is about right! But if you're energetic and you want to do this, you can! I do agree with the previous posters that trying to include Pisa is not going to work. Your decisions may be driven by how long you have in country. (And, yes, Orvieto is also an amazing place and well worthwhile.) We need more than one lifetime and lots of cash.....yes?

I can't think of any way to sanely go to Florence from Rome for a day other than by fast train - you can reserve entry times yourself to the Accademia if you want, Uffizi if you want, etc. Any tour that does not allow time to see the Duomo from the inside is not worth going with. You can fill in yourself with St Croce (usually no or a short line) and Ponte Vecchio (not so exciting really but guess we have to do it). If you have extra time stop in to SMN church across from the train station, it is often overlooked. You can walk to all these from the station.
