Travel with buses

travelling with my mother & sister in september between the dates of 3rd till 20th - 2014. When I was last there in san Gimignano (we were on a tour for 4 hrs) I noticed that there were quite a few buses around. we want to visit Lucca, sienna, florence and some surrounding areas (not sure yet). We also wanted to stay in this area for 5-7 days at a village with transport to these areas for day trips. Could you suggest a village with good transport to surrounding places that is interesting. will the tourist be still around? we will hopefully be travelling by train from Rome. We are also talking about going to Cinque Terre for 1-2 days - already know you can get there by train from florence. This probably is somewhat vague but it would be great if someone could also give some suggestions.

Rent a car.

It's the only efficient way to explore rural Tuscany.

Trains typically don't serve hill towns. And buses are geared to serve the needs of Tuscan citizens (getting them back and forth to work and school).

They are generally not geared to meet the needs of tourists.

We visited Tuscany a couple of weeks ago. We didnt have a car so we moved aroud by train. Florence to Siena is easily doable by train, the trains are very frequent. Siena to San Gimignano is also very doable by bus, there are direct connections from Siena to San Gimignano, or you can take the train to Poggibonsi (30 minutes) and take the bus from there, it leaves right outside of the station (another 30 minutes to San Gimignano). If you dont have a car and cant rent one, you might as well use Florence or SIena as your base and organize your trips from there.

Having said that, datthecoast is right. Some of the prettiest parts of Tuscany will be reachable only by car.
