The nearest (major) airport to Siena is Florence, then Pisa.

Surprisingly, perhaps, Pisa seems to be a busier international airport than Florence, and is probably your best bet if travelling from Ireland.

You really don’t have too many options for a direct flight from Ireland.

Ryanair flies from Dublin to Pisa.

While there is indeed an airport in Siena, it is an airfield used only by small private aircraft.

Pisa and Rome are approx. equally distant; there are trains from both airports, but both involve at least two connections -- see www.trenitalia.com

From Pisa airport there also is a bus to Siena (which takes more than the train and costs twice as much, but is direct).

With all due respect, Pisa airport's surely a lot nearer to Siena than Rome? Poster please double check on something like www.viamichelin.com but Rome FCO to Chiusi is 2 hrs on a good day and it's another 45 mins on from there to Siena. No way is it 2.45 from Pisa Airport to Siena even on the slow road via Certaldo. There are flights on Meridiana out of London Gatwick to Florence but I think your best bet is Ryanair to Pisa.

I stand corrected. Per the Trenitalia website, it's about 2hours 10 mins from Pisa airport to Siena, and almost 4 hours from Rome's Fiumicino airport to Siena.

You can hire cars at Pisa airport but parking a car in Siena is very expensive, probably E25 a day at least, so a bus is probably the best option. Trains come into the station at the bottom of the hill and you have to catch a bus up the hill anyway so to minimise carting luggage the bus seems the best option.
