Getting to Umbria from Rome

We will be in Umbria in July - arriving in Rome.

As we will need a car while in Umbria do you suggest renting the car in Rome and driving to Todi or taking the train to Umbria and renting a car there?

For what it's worth, I chose to take a train from Rome to Perugia, then rented a car there for our travels around Umbria and Tuscany.

Less stress for sure.

I have hired cars at Rome airport and driven up to Spoleto. Once you are on the autostrada not much of a problem but the circular around Rome is very, very busy and best avoided unless you are well accustomed to driving in Italy.

So, a lot to be said for taking the train from Fiumicino to Rome Termini and then another from Rome up to Todi, Perugia. Spoleto or wherever you are heading in Umbria.
