How to travel to Cortona?

We are staying in central Rome and need to get to cortona. We were thinking of driving as when we are in Cortona we will be wanting to travel to see some friends and the scenery around cortona. Many friends have told us driving in Rome is a nightmare. So what should we do?

- hire a car in Rome and drive to cortona

- train to Cortona and then hire a car

- train to airport and drive to Cortona (what many say is an easier drive).

I was hoping to do a slight detour to Assisi or somewhere along the way as we have all day to do the drive to Cortona. Any recommendations on a MUST stop would also be appreciated.

Thoughts?

Your second option would be difficult, as I do not think that any major rental company has an office in Cortona.

Either go out for FCO airport and rent from there; or take a train to Orvieto or Chiusi and pick up a car there.

Additionally, something to consider: Where you can rent will depend on day of the week. If it is a Sunday, then many rental offices will be closed (Chiusi, Orvieto) - however, Rome FCO (airport) and Rome Termini will be open. Additionally, many rental offices are only open on Saturdays until 1 - 1:30pm.

And as Sydneynick points out, Cortona does not have any major auto rental agencies. (You would train to Camucia for Cortona).

And yes, FCO to Cortona is a very easy drive - about 3 hours. A good stop would be Orvieto.

I would by pass driving in downtown Rome and rent a car from the airport. It would be much easier & less stressful.
