Best location in Umbria for walking from your accomodation.

For those who have travelled through Umbria where is the best place to stay in Umbria where the major activity will be walking and seeing the countryside on foot from your accomodation.

Your article was very informative. Could you recommend the best area in Assisi for accomodation where you can walk to food markets and cafes and see the sights without a car. Thank you

Anywhere within the walls of Assisi will be fine.

Assisi is indeed very small. Also very beautiful. Here are some photos I took when we were there in 2008. http://flic.kr/s/aHsiWgtPEm

Unfortunately we spent only two nights. Had we known how much we were going to enjoy it we would have stayed three.

Assisi is sounding very appealing, any suggestions for self contained type accommodation within the walls of Assisi ?

We recently visited Umbria again and collected a booklet for trekkers staying in valerian. There are nine itineraries from 12 to 33 km of length all connected one to another starting from Norcia and ending in Cascia through Cerreto di Spoleto, Spoleto and Sant'Anatolia di Narco.

Spoleto is also on the way of the Franciscan route from Camaldoli to Rieti.

Last year in the summer I've met a german who was going to march up to Monteluco where is a Franciscan convent still with monks.

As an experienced walker/ hiker who has walked most of Umbria, I would say that that the walking around Assisi is not the best Umbria has to offer - it gets very busy and is very exposed, hot and too near to civilisation for it to be beautiful. For truly beautiful and varied views, walks and countryside stay near the Monte Cucco National Park - in my opinion, the walking here rivals the Alps. There are many many marked trails and stunning walking routes, wild horses, white Chianina cattle roaming and some lovely mountain top country restaurants/ lodges with meat cooked over an open fire. The world championships for hang gliding and paragliding are also often held here - so the air is often filled with people in flight. The park office at Sigillio has lots of information about the walking routes etc...or contact www.parks.it/monte.cucco/

The views are breathtaking...

There are guesthouses and agriturismo that offer comfortable stays for walkers, try searching on Trip Advisor under hotels or speciality lodging as many of the good ones are already listed here - try Sigillio, Gualdo Tadino or Gubbio listings - all are fairly near to the park.
