Where to Go ?

After April/May in Italy - mainly north, we have 4 days to spend after leaving Assisi before heading for Rome. Any suggestions for spending that time, sort of taking it easy. Regards,

It depends whether you are planning to drive or take the train ??

One place which is close to Assisi and fabulous to visit is a very small town called Montefalco.

3. Re: Where to Go ?

We are staying four nights in Assisi and will not have a car. We thought we may move on to Spolento for our last 3 nights, but need to then travel to Fiumicino for flight out. What you think? Regards,

Any chane that you are in Umbria for May 15th? If so, head for Gubbio and the astounding Corsa dei Ceri! A magical town at any time...about 50 mins drive from Assisi..step back into the 14th century. Medieval architecture meticulously preserved..and few tourists.

If the weather warm, head to one of our family's favorite spots> Bolsena on the shores of Lake Bolsena / just west of Orvieto (another Umbrian hilltown gem) in Latium. Stop and see Civita' di BAgnoregio on your way to Bolsena.

You could easily visit Spoleto from ASsisi / 40 mins by car..but yes, can stay overnight enroute to Rome. Narni is another favorite of mine / medieval hilltown, very much un/restored...most interesting archaeological wonders.

You can reach Narni on the SS 75 heading south from Spoleto, by/passing TErni..but the most scenic route is this: exit at Eggi from the SS 75 (just before the Spoleto exit heading east from Assisi) and take the road to Narni via Scheggino *stop there for a lunch of pasta with black truffles...and then Ferentillo (stop there to see the mummies!) and S. Pietro in Valle (11th c medieval abbey..wondrous)

as you will be using public transport you will probably not manage more than one destination per day. You can easily spend two days in Assisi and do one day trip to either Spoleto or Perugia. As you need to go to Fiumicino, Orvieto might be a better choice as a second base in Umbria. It as excellent connection to Rome and it's in itself a beautiful place with a lot to see for a couple of days.

Not having a car in Umbria is quite a handicap as so many lovely places are not easy to reach by train and very slow journeys by bus.

I have stayed in both Gubbio and Spoleto and both are interesting towns. South of Assisi there are Spello , Trevi and Montefalco which are worth a visit.

A little way north of Spoleto the Fonti del Clitunno were sacred waters for the Romans and half a mile south bythe sideof the main road theTempietto del Clitunno is a very early Christian oratory datingfrom the end of the Roman Empire.

The Abbazia di San Pietro in Valle is the remains of a fine abbey founded in the 7th century with some interesting frescoes and very early Christian sarcophagi well worth a visit if you are interested in the beginnings of Christianity in Europe. It lies on the 209road north from Terni and to the east of Spoleto.

Thanks everyone for the advice - seems that a car is necessary for local trips. We have decided on Spoleto for our last nights. Regards
