visiting in August

we are in Italy and have noticed that major cities (ie Bologna, Rome) are very quiet in August due to many people being on holidays. We are staying near Arezzo and trying to decide on a day trip tomorrow - we have a car and are considering Perugia or Montepullciano - any advice? Keen to go to Perugia but not if it will be a ghost town...thanks!

This reply is probably too late for you, but we visited yesterday and can report that Perugia is open ! Relaxed with few tour groups, but worth the trip for the Umbrian art gallery alone.
