Help deciding which mountain peaks to visit

We are planning 10 days in Switzerland later this month. The first 5-6 nights, we will be based in Zurich and do some day trips to Bern, Luzern etc. Then, we will spend one night each in Montreux, Zermatt and Lugano and then come back from Milan airport.

I am trying to decide between all the various mountain peaks that are recommended by the guidebooks - any thoughts on what we should do/ could miss. We are a family of 4 with young kids (2 and 5) and not interested in hiking or skiing at this time -- mostly in enjoying the the scenic vistas and cable car / rail rides. We will be traveling with a Swiss Pass.

Specifically, should we pick Gornegat or Klein Matterhorn while in Zermatt? Should we take a trip to Murren in addition to Zermatt? If we are only in Luzern for a day, should we stay in town or try to cover one of the peaks like Pilatus or Rigi?

Hi sammyca

Unless you have a particular reason for staying Zurich why not stay in Lucerne? It is only an hour away should you wish to visit as are the beautiful cities of Bern and Basel. You will be close to the lake and the mountains. You have a choice of Pilatus, Titlis, Rigi and Stanserhorn.

Staying one night in a location means you will see very little of the area with checking in and out, packing and travelling. Why not split your days between Lucerne, Montreux and Lugano?

I guess each mountain has its own attractions that please different people. You should visit the website for each mountain, check the activities open for your date of travel and then decide.

On the day of the travel, do not forget to check the weather conditions and webcams at the top to avoid the disappointment after going all the way up to the top only to find a blanket of clouds and no scenery at all.
