Visiting InterLaken in 2 Weeks Time

My wife and I start a 9 day rail holiday in Switzerland in a week's time. We are both in our early 60s. Our itinerary includes a day visit to Interlaken arriving from Montreux at 10am on The Golden Panoramic Express and departing at 5pm. Grateful for any thoughts on how best to spend our 7 hours in Interlaken? Thank you.

Are you sure of your timings? Which rail holiday is it? What date are you travelling?

Normally the first GoldenPass Panoramic train leaves Montreux at 09.45 and arrives in Interlaken Ost at 12.50. However there are works being carried out on the line at the moment and busses are being used part of the way. The 09.45 journey is currently timed as arriving in Interlaken Ost at 14.28.

Sorry you are correct. We are travelling by InterRegio and InterCity trains from Montreux to Interlaken and returning on the Golden Panoramic Express to Montreux at 17.08pm via Zweisimmen. Our rail holiday has been put together by an independent rail travel specialist.

As an aside, if you do have any free time during your time in Montreux (and if this isn't already on the schedule), the little train from Montreux up to the summit of the Rochers de Naye is very enjoyable. The views of the lake are unbeatable on a clear day, and it's a nice mountain top for strolling around. This is a short half day activity (the train takes an hour each way) - although you can spend as much time at the summit as you want. In the summer you can look at marmots in large pens, an alpine garden, or just stroll along the ridge to look at the views. There is a rather functional station/cafe at the top, with an interesting cafe cut into the cliff:

There is also a nice narrow gauge railway up on the plateau. You can use it to do touristy things like visit the chocolate factory at Broc or go to Gruyeres, or you can enjoy the length of it just for the experience, hopping off at a couple of towns/villages/country stops (I know of a train fan who likes to do this). Do let me know if this would interest you, but realistically you would need a whole free day to make it worthwhile.

If you like funiculars there is a nice one in Vevey (Mont Pelerin), a short bus ride away from Montreux, and a summer one from Territet, just next to Montreux.

Thanks for all your advice - a bit more research is obviously required re the Interlaken options

We have a free day in Montreux and thought that we would decide - based on the weather - whether to go up to Rochers de Naye or stay low and go out to the Chateau - or do both! My wife fancies a trip on the lake but I haven't quite worked out how best to fit this in.

The Chocolate Train, Glacier Express, Bernina Express our on our itinerary with a day off in Montreux and Chur.

Hi HenGus

It looks as if your morning journey will be via Bern or Visp.

You could take a cruise on Lake Brienz while you are in Interlaken. The boat station is right by Interlaken Ost station. If you have time you could do a round trip. Otherwise return by train from Brienz. You have not said on what day you will be visiting but the Spring boat timetable starts on 15 May.

You can take a boat to or from Montreux to or from Chateau de Chillon. So, it's quite possible to fit in a morning or afternoon up at the Rochers de Naye, and a morning or afternoon at the chateau with a boat trip as an option to get you there or back from Montreux.

To get to the castle, there are 4 main options.

1. Walk along the lake path. To get there, walk down to the lake promenade, face the lake, turn left and walk for about an hour. The castle is right on the water.

2. Take the train. This is a good option if you go to the Rochers de Naye in the morning, as you will already be in the station. Take a local train to Veytaux Chillon.

3. Take the bus. This is a good option if your accommodation is down by the lake, or if you have been strolling around the lake front. Take the bus from the lake side of the road (the road is next to the lake).

4. Take the boat. The pier is on the lake front and is quite obvious. The castle has its own pier.

The SBB timetable shows the route via Zweisimmen as having returned to normal by 17 May. So let's hope the weather is fine so you can enjoy the views, particularly as the train twists and turns as it drops down into Montreux.
