Bernia express or Gotthard tunnel train route

We are travelling from Venice to Paris next June on the train & plan on a1 night stopover on the way. We cannot decide which way to go, it seems the Bernia Express route is quite expensive compared to the Gotthard Tunnel option. Is the extra cost worth it.? And is Zurich the best town for the night stopover?

Thanks

Theresa

If you only have a one night stopover en route taking the Bernina line makes no sense... you will spend too much time on trains. (Train Venice to Tirano takes 6 hours with a connection in Milano, then BE to Chur about 4.5 hrs, Chur to Zürich 1 hr and Zürich to Paris 4hrs)

If you simply go to Milano centrale and take the Gotthard line it will take you about 3hrs to get to Milano, then another 4hrs to get to Zürich.

If you could spend a few days in the Engadine en route the Bernina line would be terrific. As it is, I suggest you make a stop over in Zürich or Basel before going on to Paris. Both cities are lovely, but Basel is one hour further away from Venice for your first day's journey. Then again it is one hour closer to Paris on the next day!!

This might be totally unrealistic but just maybe...... These timings are from the SBB site and shouldn't change much before next June.

Take the 05h21 from Venice to Fluelen - two changes, one in Milan and then in Bellinzona - arriving 12h41 in Fluelen.

Then take the 14h00 boat from Fluelen to Luzern arriving 18h41

Next day you'd need one change in Basel to get from Luzern to Paris in just under four hours - several trains per day.

With just one night in Switzerland a restful boat trip with beautiful scenery and a few hours in what, to me anyway, is a lovely Swiss town, might just be worth it since you'd get the Gotthard line, a lake cruise, and scenic Luzern all in one day.

Sorry - too late to edit. Luzern to Paris is just under five hours.
