Is this correct please?

The Half Fare card is CHF 120.Is it right so that someone visiting Switzerland for a short trip and using the rail only would have to be spending in excess of CHF 240 on individual point to point tickets before the purchase of the Half Fare card is worthwhile?

Yes. There's a one year card for CHF175 if you plan multiple trips.

Thanks JT14, so as we are planning a three night trip only including rail trips of

Geneva Airport to Montreux

Montruex to Villars sur Ollon return

Montreux to one other Alpine resort return

Montreux to Geneva Airport

We should just purchase p to p tickets, yes?

Thanks for answering this for me, we've found the various tickets a bit confusing! It seems that there isnt any pass that makes sense on short visits like this? Nothing similar to the Lander Tickets in Germany?

The options are outlined here

sbb.ch/en/…swisstravelsystem.html

But you really need to do the maths for yourself to work out if a pass is cheaper than point to point tickets (sbb.ch also gives you ticket prices). It may not be unless you are travelling longer distances.

There is a Lake Geneva region pass - see this for details:

http://www.goldenpass.ch/regionalpass_package

It might be just what you are looking for. If you click on area of validity there is a map showing (in red) lines covered and (in black) lines where you can use it as a Half Fare Card.

It is worth noting also that if you are staying in a hotel in Montreux you will be given a Riviera Card by the hotel. This entitles you to free use of all LOCAL buses and local trains in the immediate vicinity. But this will not cover you for travel from Geneva to Montreux and the other trips you mention. The Regional pass will. It will even cover you for the trip to Villars AND on to la Bretaye if you want to goup there...
