3 or 4 days Swiss Rail Pass,better value ?

We are making a 5 days trip to Switzeerland from Malaysia and will be using Lucerne as base for our travel.

We need advice whether it is better to buy 4 days Swiss rail Pass or the Half Fare Card.

From our proposed trip - using Goldenline Pass to Montreux, total return cost is 146CHF; -- Then trip to Chur and back using Bernina express is 240 CHF;, - plus another trip to Jungfraujoch and back, costs 200CHF.

Is it better to buy the 3 day Swiss Pass rather than Half fare Card costing 120CHF? How does one obtain a G.A. TAG card as it seems this is cheaper to travel.

After Switzerland, we leave Lucerne to go to Vienna. Budget wise, can we use the Rail Pass, Half fare Card, if not , which is a cheaper alternative by train and the cost involved.

Thank You for all your help.

Return journey will take 10 hours.

Are you intending to travel as far as Tirano? The Bernina Express route runs between St Mortiz and Tirano. Return fare 190 CHF. Return journey takes 14 hours.

>plus another trip to Jungfraujoch and back, costs 200CHF.

Return fare 260 CHF. Return journey takes 9 hours.

If you have a Half Fare Card you buy it a the ticket office. It will cost 71 CHF each day. It will only cover you as far as Wengen/Grindelwald so you will need to add the half fare from there to Jungfraujoch to your overall travel costs when deciding which pass is best for you.

Why stay in Lucerne and then rush off all over the country? There is more than enough to see and do in and around this lovely area. Take a look a their tourist website.

Thank You for your comments. Acting on your advice, it is true, Bernina is not doable in 1 day. The GoldenPass line can be a day trip, but wonder whether it is worth the trip in terms of scenery.

My neighbor who has worked in Gstaad before, recommends going to Interlaken, Thun, Spiez and Gstaad. Hmmn, without going to Lauterbrunnen or Jungfraujoch, can the above places be covered in a day trip?

Thanks for all the info and advice given. Will take the Guided Tour of Lucerne as starting point.!

No, that's far too much for a single day from Lucerne. What's your priority - having a great day or ticking places off on a list? It's certainly wortth taking the train from Lucerne to Interlaken as it's a great trip, and there are views of the mountains from Interlaken. Probably break the journey at Brienz.

Hi Roysee,

I think what the previous posters are tyring to tell you is that what you want to do will put you on trains all the time and not allow you to intereact and explore an area?

You are almost proposing to take a train tour...and only get off the train to Sleep!

Pick one region! Most tourists are over ambitious. They want to run, run, run and never stop to soak in the beauty. They are watching it pass by a window!

Pick either Lucerne, or the Bernese Oberland, don't try and do both, or you really won't get much of either! When you have decided on one of those regions, I hope, then repost back. But hey, if you want to spend tons of money riding trains, have a nice ride!

Thank You for all the valuable infos given. will meet up with the Lucerne host, and then decide. Certainly we dont want to be in a rush, rather to feel the ambience, etc. From Lucerne, Arth -Goldau is near , isn't it. Nice sceneries there ?
