Hiking in Switzerland on October - ?

Thinking of going to Switzerland for hiking in October, 3rd - 13th.

We would like to stay several days (3-5 days) at some base point, and take day hikes from there.

Is there a recommend a base town (Grindelwald, Wengen, Lauterbrunnen , Mürren , etc.) for this season of the year?

Should we expect significant weather problems?

Thanks a lot.

Hi there,

Others might have different tastes but our pick would be Ticino province, as it has warmest climate of the country and shortest winters. E.g. Lugano or Locarno. Did it ourselves some years back between 25-Sep and 8-Oct and had 95% brilliant dry walking days from Locarno, including many hikes in the Centovalli region.

All the best,

Hi Yehonatan C

First half of October is normally a great time for a visit in the Alps. It is the time when families visit as it is school vacation.

The area you mentioned in your post is normally great you can find a lot of information on www.myjungfrau.ch

My preference in the area is Grindelwald as there is something to do even if the weather would not fit as we all hope and it is on a sunny plateau. If you would prefer to be in a smaller, car free place go ahead with Wengen.

Chiming in on this one. I have hiked in Zermatt at this time of the year as well.

It is especially beautiful at this time. Cooler weather which is ideal for hiking!

Also the throngs of people are gone....and you can walk the streets without the summer chaos. Love it at that time of year!
