Basel to Lauterbrunnen

Train fare shows as CHF 65.40. This seems very expensive for a 2.5 hour trip. Is there anything cheaper?

You may be able to find a special fare closer to whenever you are travelling but it will be for a specific train. Also depending on your other travel plans you may find that one or other of the various Swiss Rail passes is cost effective. The one month half fare card, will give you exactly that on all train travel in Switzerland. Without knowing what your plans are we cannot give you more specific advice. Have a look at the Swiss Travel website or the Swiss Rail web site both are full of information.

Once you've used Swiss Rail and experienced the quality of the service as well as the cost of the engineering to provide trains to places like Lauterbrunnen, you become much less surprised by the cost of a ticket. The trains run on time, run frequently between most places, the stations are pleasant, the staff well trained and most speak excellent English as well as other languages (salaries reflect their level of education, etc.). It is a pleasure to travel by public transportation in Switzerland and the cost is not particularly high when the cost of providing the services are calculated.

There are lots of different passes and discount cards available. Is Basel to Lauterbrunnen your only train travel? If you are going elsewhere, you might find a pass or half fare card would help. If you are just doing Basel to Lauterbrunnen, nothing will help. If you are doing Basel to Lauterbrunnen return, again, nothing will help. However, add much more travel by public transportation including bus, tram, lake ferry, mountain railways and other transportation and you may find that some of the other products offer a savings.

Thanks for the info. Yes Kileysmom I was not really looking at the cost of construction and maintainance in the Alps. Happy to pay now that I know I was looking it up correctly

Once you see the fantastic engineering for tunnels and tracks in Switzerland, you'll be really impressed! It's amazing! Then add to it a public transportation system that runs like clock work - if you need to take a bus to finish your journey on the train, the bus will be there when the train arrives! The whole system is integrated and efficient.
