2015 Pre River Cruise Planning

Hello:

Two couples will be traveling with Avalon from Basel to Amsterdam. We are planning to arrive in Europe a few days before we begin our cruise.

The big question is: where should we spend our few days? I want to spend at least one night in Basel prior to boarding our barge.

Two of the four have been to Europe. We are thinking of spending a couple days in Munich but someone has mentioned the Black Forest. The more I read Northern France also appears interesting. We like learning the culture, pubs, and history. We are traveling in September and one person would like to see an Oktoberfest or similar event.

We will fly into a city, then probably use trains/public transportation.

Thank you in advance!

Tami

You are coming from the prairies, and going to travel down the lower reaches of the Rhine. Your extra days would be better spent to appreciate Alpine scenery, even if you don't climb any mountains.

Suggest you fly into Munich, enjoy Octoberfest, then take the train via Innsbruck, travel the Arlberg Pass on way to Switzerland. Stay in Lucerne for a couple of days, making day trips around, may be some peaks around town. Many smaller cities in the region will have something similar to Octoberfest on a slightly different date, just less grand on atmosphere.

Your cruise route will probably stop by Breisach, and passengers will choose to visit either Colmar or Freiburg im Breisgau. Both showcase typical Black Forest architecture. Further down the river you will see castles too.

The key word here is "Oktoberfest" which contains the word "October"... this sets a time limit if you travel in September. Incidentally, Oktoberfest 2015 starts Sept 19th in Munich so you might just fit in.

Northern France is pretty, but it isn't just around the corner. You might think about going to Paris, though. From Basel with the TGV, and booked early, the train fares are extremely low (SNCF uses this line to pull people into Paris, essentially). There are usually cheap One-Day train tickets available for Sept/Oct, so you could do elaborate daily excursions all over Switzerland from Basel.
