Not sure it makes sense to change of hotels every evening in such a small area. Geneva is 1/2 hour train ride from Lausanne, and 45 minutes from Montreux. Given the fact Lausanne doesn't offer that much (the Olympic Museum may-be). I would go from Geneva to Montreux directly. Also, Geneva is probably worth 2 days. While Annecy might be done within a day from Geneva.

And how do you intend to go from Montreux to Chamonix? There is a road through Martigny but we are talking about a 4 hours trip.

Hope this helps.

Hi Thanks for your reply!

Yeah I wonder if we should really change hotels so often but it does make sense if travelling in that order.. and also hotels outside Geneva are cheaper too. Still wondering.. :P

Montreux to Chamonix will be

1.half hour train Montreux to Martigny

2. Mont Blanc Express Route: Martigny - Châtelard Frontière - Chamonix (France) supposed to be a scenic ride

Can you suggest any other places to visit?

Thanks again!

Montreux to Chamonix: yes, that's the way. You can btw check the schedule on www.rail.ch (it is "rail" but actually covers any public transportation in Switzerland and around). It is a nice route, but IMV not a breath taking one.

From Montreux, you could ride the http://www.goldenpass.ch/, a very nice and scenic route. You could do that within a day or consider another circular route and spend some time in the Interlaken area (that for me is far nicer than Chamonix - http://www.interlaken.ch/). On your way back, you could stop in Gruyere (yes, this is a must go - http://www.la-gruyere.ch/en/welcome.cfm).

This train map can help you: sbb.ch/content/sbb/en/desktop/freizeit-ferie…

And you might want to look at swisstravelsystem.ch/en/…

Wow thanks a lot for all the info! ^_^

Would it be too far to go to Lucerne? Since Annecy seems to only take 1 day and you mention Lausanne can be skipped.

cheers

Lucerne is 3 hours by train from Geneva... You could do Geneva - Montreux - Interlaken - Luzern - Geneva (via Gruyere). Between Luzern and Geneva, you could also stop by Bern (nice city and if you are into art, the Paul Klee museum (http://www.zpk.org/) is really worth a visit. Bern - Gruyere is less than 1 hour train & bus).

Sounds good! No need to book trains in Switzerland, with the exception of special ones like http://www.goldenpass.ch/. www.rail.ch will give you all the details (of all Swiss public transportations) including expecting occupancy and allows you to buy online. And if you are using a smart-phone, mobile apps are freely available (sbb.ch/en/…mobile-apps.html).

<Since it's July and high season, do we need to book train tix in advance?> No, it's not common here to reserve seats. If there are lot of people (rush hours in cities, sunny and warm weekend days in the Alps) some trains can be pretty full, but you can always get in.

Keep the program flexible and keep the best weather for trips to the mountains.

Day2 Interlaken itself is not a destination, there is nothing to see there. You can go to a mountain village or a mountain top, or use it to change to a boat (on lake Thun or Brienz)

Are you sure you don't want to spend more time in the mountains?
