stay overnight in Geneva vs. Lausanne??

Is Lausanne a better place to stay for an overnight than Geneva as part of a vacation? I am getting the feeling it's more charming than staying in the larger city of Geneva.

City feeling is pretty much the same. If you are looking at a smaller place, try Montreux. If visiting is what you are after, then Geneva should be your destination.

It depends on what interests you. Geneva has a very international feel. There are lots of interesting things to including museums and restaurants. Also an extremely pretty old town. Lausanne is smaller, but still feels like a city - it's a bit harder to get around if you are unfamiliar (although not hard by many places' standards). I find it more relaxed than Geneva. However, like Swissdiver, I actually much prefer the atmosphere further up the lake of Vevey or Montreux. This area is called the Swiss Riviera. The mountain views are more impressive, the architecture a bit different and it's all rather pleasant. Montreux or Vevey are about an hour by train from Geneva airport.

It could also depend on where you are going next?

If you don't know Lausanne it can be very hard to find your way about. (On a long sloping hillside, bi-sected by an old river bed so it is on several levels). And though Lausanne has a nice old town part it is quite small.

Geneva on the other hand has lots more on offer - loads of museums, beautiful and extensive old town, and the international area with the UN, Red Cross etc. Plus the lakefront in Geneva is in the midst of the town. In Lausanne it is not. Dining out in Geneva is better than Lausanne - far more to choose from.

Montreux OR Vevey are both lovely. And about an hour from the airport by train.
