budget accomodation for family of 4

I am travelling Europe in March/April this year. We are a family with 2 kids (10 and 6).

I really want to put Lucerne on the itinerary, as I would love to take the kids up a mountain but I am struggling to find accomodation within our limited budget. I really want to keep the nightly cost under 120 Swiss Francs.

I have been searching for days. This looks like just what we need but is not available for either of the dates I can fit in (from 29 March or 19 April).

I would love a farmstay eg. homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p2081924#reviews but they seem to be mostly out of the way and I don't know how we would go about self catering. Where do you buy groceries from?

www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p751363 This also looks doable, but it has no reviews so I am reluctant.

Am I looking in the wrong places? - even if I up my budget a bit, I still can't find apartment available.

Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong.

Hi Melmanthegiraffe

For me the one and only pace to find accommodation within the Lucerne area is www.luzern.com . Other than in some other countries, the rooms in Switzerland are normally not designed for families of four (size and insurance reasons). This means you are looking for two rooms or for places with larger rooms.

One of the hotels at Lucerne which have four bed rooms is the Tourist Hotel - http://touristhotel.ch/zimmer/?lang=en - which is very nicely located along river Reuss and in the old town. The price range is close to your budget.

An other option would be to go to the Youth Hostel - www.sjh.ch/en - and to look for a family room there. These hostels are not only available for young people but also for families.

You also could look at the backpacker hostel at Lucerne - https:/…index_en.php -.

All these places are nicely located. While the Youth Hostel is located above Rootsee (lake Root) and a beautiful small nature reservation and close to a bus which brings you downtown all the other ones are located close to the old town.

If a place does not have reviews it does not mean that it is bad. It just means that nobody took the time to write a review. Maybe you will do?

Happy planning

I had a very hard time last summer finding a place in Lucerne for our family of 5. The end result would have been booking two hotel rooms. We decided in the end to make two day trips to Lucerne from our base in Basel. It was a quick one hour train ride. We did, however, find accommodation for our family together in Murren, Vevey and Gruyeres. If you're looking for locations outside Lucerne, let me know and I'll give you the names of a few places to check out.

It's 36.50 CHF each in a 4 bedded room but this includes breakfast so realistically within budget. Excellent beds, we've always enjoyed swiss youth hostels.
