What to do on a Sunday before we leave?

We have our final day in Lucerne on a Sunday and need to be at Zurich airport by around 7 pm. Have luggage to consider as well. Are shops closed on Sundays? What are some ideas that would work for us?

Depending on airline and flight, you could check in already at Lucerne railway station. Alternate solution would be using rail baggage. For details see www.sbb.ch/en "Station and services" - "Luggage"

I would most probably leave Lucerne late morning or early afternoon for a direct train to Zurich airport, check in luggage, use train/tramway for a short Zurich tour (train 10 to 15 minutes Zurich airport to main railway station; half hour by tramway). On Sundays regular shops will be closed (might be an advantage when walking Zurich Bahnhofstrasse ....), only shops at airport, railway stations and some shops at tourist places will be open. For a short Zurich tour check tripadvisor recommendations.

Hi EmbraceTheMoment

Most Shops will be closed. The ones at the railway station will be open. All attractions at Lucerne will be operating,. Why not spend a day at the transport museum - www.verkehrshaus.ch - which is really great.

If you would prefer to see something else you could visit the old Town of Zurich (shops closed) or the rhine fall - www.rheinfall.ch -. You would leave your luggage in a locker of a larger railway station (for example Zurich HB).

Have fun

If your airline allows it (list on the SBB site) use "Check in at the station" the night before. Then you have no further worries about luggage except hand luggage. If the airline doesn't allow this the SBB will take your bags to the airport station luggage office where you simply collect them once off the train and en route to the check in counter. It works like a charm! Cost varies depending on airline and class of travel. Budget 22frs/bag which is the basic charge.

I second Pore's suggestion of the transport museum. It is absorbing and you really need a minimum of 4hrs there. They also have a nice café where you can have lunch...

We also flew out of Zurich on a Sunday last month. We spent our last night in Zurich and then spent the Sunday at the Rhine Falls which was fantastic.

It was then just a quick train ride to the airport for our flight home.

You could obviously do all this from Lucerne as well, but having a Zurich hotel gave us somewhere to leave our luggage while we were at the Falls.

But instead of changing hotels we could just leave our luggage at the ? Station. Which station would that be?

If you are going to stay in Lucerne, just ask your hotel to hold your luggage for the day. Any good hotel is prepared to do this for their customers!
