Which train pass to get for 4 days in Lucerne in April

Four couples will be traveling to Lucerne the beginning of April and we are confused about whether to get train passes ahead of time, and if so, which one to get. We are taking a Viking Cruise ending in Basel, then taking the train to Lucerne for 4 days, and traveling back to Basel. While in Lucerne, we are planning to visit Mt. Pilatus, Mt. Titlus, and possibly Mt. Rigi. Do we need to get a pass ahead of time? To travel from Basel to Lucerne, do we need to get a ticket or pass ahead of time, or can we just purchase it on that day?

1. There is no need to purchase transport ticket within Switzerland in advance. Just before you board. Tickets don't sell out, and there is no savings (except Supersaver train specific e-tickets which cannot be bought more than 14 days ahead, but it is non-negotiable).

2. Basel to Lucerne is a short distance, cheaper with just p-to-p. Buy it using the first ticket machine you come across (even at a bus stop) that day. I like to make sure that I am ready to use the ticket before buying it.

You should make a definite itinerary and do the math before deciding on a Pass. It is the mountain excursions which cost more, not surface transport.

I would suggest you look at the Tell Pass as that now includes all three mountain trips you mention and the transport costs involved in getting to them www.tellpass.ch

Hi GigiPop50 and welcome on the Forum

Doing the math for your time at Lucerne you should also look at the regional pass which includes train, bus, boat and most cable cars - see www.tellpass.ch - and compare it with point to point tickets - www.sbb.ch/en -, the half fare pass and the Swiss Pass - www.swisstravelsystem.ch -.

The Tell Pass, like the other passes mentioned above, can be purchased at Basel railway station. Ask there for a ticket to Lucerne when you purchase your pass, they will sell you the correct ticket.

Basel to Lucerne is a 1 1/2 hours train trip.

You also can go with point to point tickets if you are not sure if the weather would allow mountain excursions.

Look at www.luzern.com and the Top Questions about Lucerne (upper right side of your screen) for more information about the area.
