Where to purchase vignette?

Hello

We are continuing a road trip. Leaving Strasbourg tomorrow, heading to Lucerne via Germany.

Where do I buy a vignette? Is there a plaza at the border? And do I need papers? It's a rental car from France.

Thank you all, you have been very helpful to us.

1. Re: Where to purchase vignette?

If you enter Switzerland by car on a highway, you can buy the vignette at customs border office - sometimes even a separate lane singaled and open for cars without vignette. Assuming you travel from Strasbourg to Lucerne on the German side of Rhine river, you can cross the border to Switzerland on the highway at Basel or Rheinfelden and buy it when crossing the border. No papers required for buying the vignette.

In addition most gas stations and post offices in Switzerland sell vignettes.

Quote from some Swiss Federal office regarding the highway vignette: "The sticker is required for all cars driving on swiss highways / motorways but not necessary if you only use the regular roads. It is valid for a given calendar year can be bought at border checkpoints when entering Switzerland, at the offices of the Swiss automobile service clubs ACS and TCS in Switzerland, as well as at police stations and many post offices and gas stations in Switzerland.

2. Re: Where to purchase vignette?

Coming from Germany into Switzerland at Basel when you come to the Swiss border there are lanes marked on the road for cars with the vignette and without the vignette. Just drive into the "without" lane and buy it there. They take credit/debit cards and CHF and EUR cash. (Maybe a way of getting rid of your left.over Euros?)

Thank you very much, sounds efficient and quick. As far as left over Euros go... We are returning to France.

Driving across country to Mont s Michel, Normandy, Versailles and departing from CDG end of month.

OK - so just use a CC! Visa, MasterCard are accepted. I am not sure about AMEX... not much liked here!
