16 day circular route?

Hi

We are group of three and are thinking of arranging a short European trip over 16 days next May/June ‘14.

We are thinking of visiting 3 (maybe 4) countries and looking to arrange a car-hire for a circular tour of different cities/areas. So far the cities we are considering include Munich, Bavaria, Vienna, Venice, Florence (Tuscany) and the Swiss alps.

We see this as a food & culture holiday so hope to visit some beautiful spots taking in the wonderful views and enjoying good food at the same time.

I would be grateful if anyone can suggest a good circular route and which cities/areas to include? which not only takes in some beautiful landscapes, towns/villages but also the most convenient in terms of ease of destination. Excluding travelling between cities/countries I would imagine staying 3 (maybe 4) nights in the main cities/areas.

On previous holidays we enjoyed the road trips so hope to be able to pass through some wonderful spots as we travel from city to city. We will be flying out from London and do not necessarily have to leave from the same arrival destination.

Many thanks for your suggestions,

Jay

How flexible is the length of your trip? You've mentioned 16 days but you say you'd like to stay 3 or 4 days in each of the mentioned cities/areas... that brings it to 18 days (if only 3 in each), not including travel days. Taking travel into consideration, if you only have 16 days total, you would only have 1 or 2 days in each location. You'll spend so much time checking in and out of locations that you'll barely have a chance to visit. I would suggest that you cut out a few destinations and then plan a route that allows you at least 3 nights and at least three full days in each stop after travel, packing and check in is taken into consideration.

Casper, thank you for the reply.

Yes, the duration is 16 days in total and we are not suggesting visiting all cities. We are used to driving long distances (e.g. US and Canada) and are comfortable driving to each city within the day. We are looking at least three nights at each destination.

If you have a suggested itinerary do let us know.

Munich, Vienna, Venice, Florence - kind of cities I would try to avoid when travelling by car. Try to get reasonably priced parking near the places you want to visit and use local public transporation (or walk)

In addition, some of the most scenic Alps pass roads in Switzerland open usually late May to early June - can be May, but also early June depending on snow to be removed. So try to put the Swiss Alps part at the end of your planned tour.

For central Swiss Alps check for websites on Furka, Susten, Grimsel, Nufenen mountain passes. For mountain pass roads, best are websites made by and for motorbikers.

There are plenty of scenic routes in the Alps. Easiest help probably is viamichelin - scenic routes are marked green.

thank you for the tip on mountain passes and leaving Swiss Alps to last. We have driven through some of the most busiest cities in the world so would still like to drive to Munich, Vienna, etc.

By the way, what is viamichelin ?

Michelin started 1900 with a restaurant guide (that imho still is the best for many countries), added tourist guides and roadmaps. Their tourist info website is www.viamichelin.com (wheras www.michelin.com is for Michelin tires)

Regarding travelling in cities of your list: problem now is mainly parking and access restrictions for non-residents.
