grindelwald - paragliding & hiking

Me & two friends are headed to Grindelwald in Mid Sept for 3 days. We are hoping to go paragliding and do some hiking. Are there places right in Grindelwald that cater to paragliding? Also - is hiking on foot to First doable or is it better to take the bus/gondola/lift to First and hike from there? We enjoy hiking but would like hikes that are easily doable in hiking boots only - no equipment needed.... What about glaciers - are the tours any good?? Any suggestions for day hikes would be great!

Hiking to First is doable in a couple of hours. Terrian is pretty easy but the gondola only takes about 20 minutes and the best scenery is at First and above so from a use of time stand point I'd opt for the gondola. There are lots of takeoff points for parasailing at and above first. On the weekends the sky is full of them.

The tours are a waste. Unless you're tring to climb the Eiger there is no place over there where you really need a guide. Everything is so well marked it's easy. You can walk right up to the glacier above Grindelwald or take the train up to the Jungfraujoch.

Hiking suggestion. Start early. Catch the early gondola up to First. Hike up to the Faulhorn, stop for an iced tea. Continue on to the Shynigge Platte. Train on down to Wilderswil and back to Grindelwald. Long walk but some of the best views in the Oberland.

Be sure to check the time of the last train down from SP because it's another 2 1/2 hrs down if you miss it.

There is a paragliding (Gleitschirm) school right in Grindelwald:

My son counted 42 paragliders up in the air above First at the same time, so it's quite a popular activity from Grindelwald.
