A week in Interlaken with 2 children, advice please! :)

We are going to Interlaken 3-10th sept next year, booked in at campsite, bargain price too!

We want to go to 'top of europe' and maybe along the thun lake.

But what else is there to do for young families (our munchkins will be almost 4 and 71/2)

I personally would love to do typical hiking stuff but worry about their little legs.

Taking away the arriving and departure day we have 5 full days, any ideas would be great, thank you in advance

There is loads to do - try to get a rail pass although you do have to pay extra for the top of europe. There is plenty to see and do up there but we did feel a bit strange from the high altitude.

They will love the little mountain railways and cable cars,

Last summer, we spent 3 nights in Interlaken with our children, ages 9 & 10, as part of a longer Swiss Trip. Our children found the following the highlights of the Interlaken stop:

• Taking the funicular to the top of Mt. Harden - then allowing them to play on the playground on top - there was a wonderful slide, some swings, etc. You could also just look around and explore.

• Taking the funicular up to Allmendhubel. Here, they also enjoyed playing at the playground at the top. Swings, teeter-totter, slides, etc. Then it’s not too bac of a walk to the Pension Sonnenberg for lunch. I think 4 ½ is too young to go much further than that….but this is doable, and is really glorious on a nice day.

• Open-air museum at Ballenberg. There are lots of things to keep kids occupied, and are fun for adults as well. The day we were there, there were many Swiss families also visiting. You can have lunch, playgrounds, there’s an old outdoor bowling alley of sorts, a petting zoo, etc. In addition, they can go into old houses, and see how people used to live.

Note: we had a Swiss pass which provided transportation to these places, and also gave free entry to Ballenberg.

Bottom line is that the children enjoyed being outdoors and able to play just like at home...only in a new setting! Hope this is of some help. Have a wonderful trip!
