Just returned from Wengen and had a great time

We’ve just returned from a week long stay in Wengen and had a fantastic time. We would recommend staying there to anyone, from walking or biking enthusiasts to those who just want to view the fantastic mountain scenery.

Getting around is so easy on the rail and cable car system. We bought a Junfraubahn pass (bought half price, around 140 chf, with a Swiss half fare card) which meant we could travel round with ease, not having to worry about buying tickets or deciding on return or round trips. And of course everything runs on time, to the second!

Wengen is a great place to stay, very picturesque and with great links to the rest of the Jungfrau region. Even after spending a week there we only managed to scratch the surface of walks to do and places to visit. We will definitely be returning again.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice through the forums. For anyone planning a trip in the near future we hope you have as good a time in Wengen as we did. It’s a wonderful location.

Thanks,

We self catered at the Residence which had everything we needed. Plenty of space, very clean and quiet.

The weather was fantastic and warm as well. Most days started very sunny with clear views of the Jungfrau to greet us. Cloud bubbled up a bit in the afternoon but not enough to spoil the views. We did have a couple of thunder storms overnight be these cleared by the morning. The only day we did get wet was when the thunder caught up with us sprinting to the Mannlichen cable station but this only added to the atmosphere of being in the mountains.

Highlight was seeing the Eiger for real after reading so much about the history on the north face. Can’t wait to go back and explore more of the area, in fact I have started surfing for flights already!

One question about your hike to the Eiger..........we were thinking of a day hike taking the lift to Mannlicken, walk to Klein Scheidegg then on to the North Face of the Eiger. After that return to Klein Scheidegg and hike down to Wengen. What do you think of that for a day trip (6 hrs?). From what I can tell the Mannlicken - K. Scheidegg - Eiger hiking is relatively level and the stretch to Wengen is downhill. What do you think?

The walk from Mannlichen to Kleine Sheidegg is pretty easy, mostly down hill and on a good wide track. Probably takes about an hour to hour and a half (lots of good photo stops).

The Eiger trail is a bit longer, we walked from KS to Alpiglen. The path is narrow and runs along the screes at the bottom of the north face. Mostly down hill in this direction but with a bit of a pull up in the middle. Walking poles are useful for this, we were glad to have worn our walking boots as well that day. The final path down to Alpiglen is fairly steep and zig zags down the hill side. I think the signs suggest 2.5 hours but I must admit we lingered for quiet a long time just gazing up at the face. It’s such an amazing place you really don’t want to rush the walk. You can catch a train back up to KS from Alpiglen then decide if you want to do any more walking or not. There is a station between KS and Wengen, about an hour down the track so you could always jump on a train. We didn’t walk right down to Wengen so not sure how long this will take.

It might be good just to do the walk from Mannlichen to Wengen as one, then on another day extend the Eiger Trail by walking right down to Grindlewald. There are a couple of different routes from Alpiglen, one stays quite high and, although we didn’t do it this time, did look pretty good.

It depends on how fast you want to walk, it is worth taking your time to get the most out of it. Also, keep an eye on the weather. The Eiger seems to attract afternoon cloud, as do its neighbours so you might want to make the most of the big views in the morning.

Hope you have a fantastic trip, when are you going?

We are going in September.........crowds should be down........hoping for good weather.

The Eiger hike you describe sounds like a great hike. We will be staying in Murren, so we plan to hike that side of the valley also. Any suggestions for that area?

Thanks for the info.

Hi Delaney123,

We didn’t get over to the Murren side of the valley unfortunately. We did plan to cycle on that side but in the end we had too many options for walks and rides and not enough days to do them all! From reading the forum comments on Murren it sounds like you will have a lot of choices for walks and exploration. There are quite a lot of suggestions from different people.

As you will probably have read the funicular from Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp is currently being replaced so to reach Murren you can get the bus up the valley then the cable car from Stechelberg up (again other forum users will know more about costs, times etc). We did a nice walk up the valley from Lauterbrunnen towards Stechelberg and stopped of at Trummelbach falls (11 francs entrance fee). This is well worth a visit, particularly if you are looking for a wet day alternative activity. Event the walk up the valley is stunning with good views up to Jungfrau.

I’m sure you’ll have a great trip in September and will find that there is loads to do and explore. The Jungraubahn (www.jungfraubahn.ch/en) website has a lot of information on it as well as maps and walk suggestions.

Have a great time

So glad to read your report, we leave in late September for a week of hiking in the region. Have narrowed down our base to either Wengen or Muerren. Glad to read about all the lovely hikes accessible from Wengen, I'm leaning that way. Is the village itself quiet and atmospheric? Do you have any recommendations there for where to stay or eat?

Ther are numerous hikes in the Murren area that offer great views and some less tourist traffic than some of the other spots. Depending on your level of fitnes and the length of hike you are looking for things range from an easy walk from Murren to Grutchalp to climbing the Schilthorn. The walk to Grutchalp will take an hour or so and is quite easy. Getting up the Schilthorn takes around four and a half hours and has some steep points. Altitude chango of about 4500 ft.

Whichever way you go the views are great.

Thanks, Mountaintopper. "Less tourist traffic" sounds good! We're up for 4-5 hours hikes per day, once we've adjusted to the altitude, so the walks you describe sound good, as long as there's no technical climbing involved; the only gear we'll have is our hiking boots and walking sticks.

Can you recommend any "gemutlich" accomodations in either Murren or Wengen? We don't need fancy -- just quiet and great views. And which base do YOU prefer, Murren or Wengen? And why?
