Zermatt v. Wengen v. Verbier

Planning a honeymoon trip with one week in Paris and one week skiing. Would appreciate any information re these three ski destinations (or others). Looking for high intermediate skiing and good après ski environment. Which may be best combination of skiing and restaurant scene/nightlife? Thank you in advance.

You may find people who have skied all 3. I have skied in Wengen and know Verbier extremely well (have a chalet there). My experience of Zermatt is via friends and reading a lot - but not going there.

Very different options.

Verbier is primarily a skiers resort known for advanced skiing, especially off piste. It is also known for being a party town (by Swiss standards). Very casual but vibrant night life. You will never more than jeans - but you might sit next to royalty... that sort of place. Food has improved massively - but again it's not Michelin style food. Also - and this might be the decider for you - it is a chalet town. There are some hotels - but while some are good, you don't go to Verbier for the hotels (or the food). Village is very sunny with beautiful views. Skiing goes high, so has one of the longest seasons (along with Zermatt) ending at end April.

Wengen - know less well. Much smaller, and quieter. Skiing is less challenging (and the least challenging of the 3). Not the best bet as you move later into April as it's less high than the other 2. I believe its season ends in mid-April.

Zermatt - you can read tons of fan mail about Zermatt on this site. It combines challenging skiing with great hotels and restaurants, and Swiss chocolate box "looks". It's probably "honeymoon destination of choice" for advanced intermediates coming from abroad.

Sounds like I am recommending the place I have never been?! I adore Verbier - and spent wedding anniversaries there etc (so could imagine it for a honeymoon). But you need to know what you are 'buying' as it is a bit different to Zermatt.

Looking forward to hearing other views! Oddly the Zermatt vs Verbier comparison comes up rarely on the forum.

Hi 504traveler,

I've skied from Wengen two times and agree with JT14 on the assessment -- it is a small and cosy resort, not big on nightlife or dining out. Most folks find themselves tired after a day of hiking or skiing, so have dinner at the hotel and then a few drinks in the hotel lounge.

I've been to Zermatt twice (once for a week), and I think that would give you what you want. It's big enough to have the nightlife and restaurant scene you want, and the skiing is challenging. I, personally, don't care for the looks of the town, though -- I find it overbuilt and crowded. It sits at the end of a valley with little acreage for building, but still hotels and apartments keep going up, seemingly on top of one another, sorta higgledy-piggledy. However, as JT notes above, scores of folks love it there!

Have fun as you plan!

The most appropriate town for a honeymoon is Zermatt. I agree with the other posts regarding Wengen and Verbier.

Agree with above - Zermatt.

Also agree with Swandav -unfortunately a victim of its own "success".

There is unfortunately sometimes in some places a point where commercialism takes over.

Interesting feedback for Zermatt....

You might want to consider St Moritz in the mix. With Zermatt and Verbier you have picked 2 of Switzerland "fashionable" resorts. St Mortiz is another - and different to the other 2. More understated old school glamour. Fine for high intermediate. Very beautiful region. Look into it.

I would choose zermatt, some of the scenery is breathtaking , combined with great mountain restaurants ,and you can ski into Italy for lunch

I can't judge the other two, but Zermatt has all you want on you list.

I will really miss the lunch at Bontadini this winter, so delicious.

Zermatt is also more convenient to Paris than St. Moritz.
