Zermatt for NYE

We are going to Zermatt for NYE this year and was wondering what the place is like on NYE ? Can anyone recommend a good place to eat and somewhere to enjoy the night ? Do loads of people gather in the main square and set of fireworks and have a blast :-)

Lynette,

I would caution you about going to Zermatt on NYears eve without a reservation! It is very difficult to find a room for "one Night" at this time of year. You might want to look at the website www.zermatt.ch. You might be able to find a room in Taesch for the night. It is the town below Zermatt. However, I am not sure you will then find a very late shuttle train down to Taesch? You probably could take a cab, however.

New Year's Eve is great fun in Zermatt. Lots of (good natured) partying in the street, the Champagne Bar made out of ice outside the Zermatternof lends a touch of sparkle, and people party through til the early hours. You don't say where you are staying, but hotels often lay on four or five course gala dinners and indeed most of the restaurants do the same. That is the one catch, grabbing a quick one course meal is not easy as many places only serve 'Sylvester' meals ( as the night is known in that part of the world) and these are often pretty expensive.

Maybe if you can identify your criteria, approximate budget, preferences and so on some more specific suggestions can be made. I'ld be surprised if you didn't find it a memorable night however, as even though the fireworks aren't quite on the scale of those in Sydney, they are still pretty special with the shadow of the Matterhorn in the background!

Have fun

Presumably you have a hotel booked. Yes there are fireworks and people mill about in the Bahnhofstrasse. It is very festive but not nearly the "scene" that Verbier has!

For dinner I recommend the Spycher restaurant in the Aristela hotel. It is very good and we have enjoyed eating there for many many years. It is also very "cosy". Better reserve early. Another option is the Mazot restaurant and if you want cheese the Stockhorn.
