Hi blvd,

The Jazz Fest's website is at www.montreuxjazz.com; you can get the program as well as buy tickets at the site.

If you can tell us what is "best" for you, we can help steer you to the right hotel. What is your preference -- economy, convenience, luxury, views? What is your price range? Montreux is a very compact city, and you can walk to any venue from any hotel. You can find all the hotels at either www.montreux.ch or www.montreux-vevey.com

I will also add that you should get your hotel asap!

Swandee,

Thanks for your info. I have been reading some of your previous post about the montreux, gstaad . area and enjoyed your pictures. I also read about several hotels in Montreux area. Someone recommended Hotel du pont. I could not find any info on that hotel in Montreux. I want a quiet hotel with non smoking rooms, 160. US dollars a night. Will consider staying in Luesanne also. Need convience for jazz festival and golden pass train trip. No car.

I want to stay in the Montreux area about 3 days and leave on the golden pass train going to interlaken and stay about a week in Murren.

Will see the bernese oberland area from there, so will use the lifts a lot. From there will go spend 2-3 days seeing lucern, bern. travel back to geniva airport for home.

Should I buy the swiss pass and a junfraugh pass for all the lifts, or just get one pass or the other?

blve.

Hi, We stayed in Montreux June last year for a couple of nights, after sifting through TA reviews I decided on Hotel Splendid, mainly for cost factor (everything else was so expensive for our budget). I have 4/5 star taste, but when on holidays, we try to keep the cost of accommodation down, especially when travelling for a month. Anyway I was pleasantly surprised with this hotel and would definitely return. There were 3 of us in one room and my elderly parents in another room next to us. Both these rooms were very spacious and the window overlooked the lake and mountains - beautiful!! (although I would guess most of the accommodation in Montreux would have such views - albeit at a greater cost). The bathrooms looked newly renovated. The manager could not have been more helpful - my daughter needed to use the internet and they assisted us to do this in their office. Breakfast, as I recall was very European and sufficient. Don't be put off by the entry - at street level it is adjacent to a bar, with a small elevator to the 1st floor Reception. In regard to smoking, I requested non smoking, and that's what we got. Sorry, I can't remember what the cost was, but I know it was less expensive than a lot that I enquired at. It's a beautiful place, and I was thankful to a forum reply that guided us to stay here on our European vacation. We are returning to Switzerland in May this year, heading through Lucern and Zurich this time. Hope you enjoy. LS

Hi blvd,

About train passes -- the only way you can be certain to be getting the best train fares is to do the math, and unfortunately, I *don't do* math! The hard way, and the way I usually do it, is to make a spreadsheet with each trip down the side and a column for each pass/fare combination. The easy way to do it, though not as accurate, is to use www.railsaver.com. Just input your itinerary and the travelers' information, then click on "only if it saves me money." It will give you an idea of the point-point train fares as well as which pass, if any, will save you money.

I usually get the Half Fare Card and am content with the savings (and don't sweat it if I end up paying $20 or $30 more than I had estimated ....).

Now, about a hotel in Montreux. I've never stayed at the Splendid, but have heard other good things about it, so that's a good option. Another option is a popular 3-star called Hotel Masson, but it's a mile or two away from the center of Montreux (good bus & ferry transport though). A friend of mine has enjoyed the Hotel Negociants in Vevey too (you *may* want to get away from the noise & activity of the fest area).

I believe the Hotel du Pont has closed -- it used to be my favorite restaurant in the area but can't get it online anymore.

Good luck!

Hi blvd

The Hotel du Pont is now closed. It re-opened as the Bar-Restaurant du Pont (under new owners) in October but no longer offers accommodation. If you are looking for reasonably priced accommodation for the festival then I reccommend the Hotel Elite, which is in the heart of Montreux, virtually opposite the casino.

In practical terms, you are 3 mins walk from the Rouvenaz and about 10 mins from the Convention centre.

Hotel details can be found at:

http://www.montreux.ch/elite/

The owner is Reto - he speaks good English though he can be a little slow in replying to emails. Hotel has no bar / restaurant but there are many within a 30 second walk from the hotel.

We go to the Jazz festival every year and used to stay at the du Pont but now we stay at the Elite - not sure if that is a recommendation!!

Anyway, this year we will be there during the first week until the 13th July - staying at the Elite, so if you need any further specific information regarding the festival the please let me know

I have been searching various forums for about a month now, while I plan my trip to Switzerland and Italy for July.I could really use advise on my itinerary and hotel choices and rail travel. If someone would be so king to review my tentative plans and respond ,I would greatly appreciate it.Will will be starting in Geneva to meet my daughter who lives there, and then travel to Montreux for the last night of the jazz festival.I would like to see the country side there and thought a trip to Gueryers would be nice.WE then move forward to Zermatt to see the matterhorn for 2 nights and then down to Lake Como for one night. On to Parma and Bologna for one night and then over to Venice for two nights, and then fly back to Geneva. The idea was to see both Switzerland and northern Italy, with the taste of Emilia, and a visit to Venice. Please Help!!

would love some more info about the jazz festival itself and Hotel Elite. seems very reasonably priced and well located. is it of OK quality, clean etc, I assume not air conditioned but wonder what the temperatures are usually like in Montreux in July?

Is Hotel Elite reasonably quiet. Any particular rooms one should ask for

also any recommended day trips from Montreux with maybe a bit of walking thrown in. I would plan to spend about 10 days in Montruex but hope to do day trips most days and then come back each evening for the music.

thnaks

For vaca247 -- I don't know if you're still looking at these forums, but if you are I thought I'd send a note your way. I think the direction of your travel is good and seems to make good sense to me. I do have problems with staying one one or two nights at each place -- that's a lot of packing up & unpacking. Each time you move bases, you lose half of a day just with "housekeeping" chores, leaving you with little time in the place you wanted to see. So basically I would add 2-3 nights in each of your spots or drop one or two spots.

For talpain -- What kind of information do you want for the Jazz Fest? Did you take a look at the website to see the program, etc?

About Hotel Elite, sorry, I haven't ever stayed there. It may well be noisy, as it's on the main drag. It also can be quite hot in July in Montreux.

Here are some ideas of things you can do based from Montreux:

Hi Talpain

Regarding the Hotel Elite - It's a nice little hotel - very clean and tidy but no aircon. Regarding traffic noise, it is on a fairly quiet street (Swandav - you are correct, it does have a front entrance out onto Avenue du Casino, but there are no rooms at the front of the hotel) despite it's central location - I've never noticed traffic noise to be a problem.

Refarding the weather in July: Well it is usually pretty pleasant - around 25-28C during the day and about 18-20C at night) though you will almost certainly get the odd shower or two. Last year was awful as the heatwave that hit Europe pushed temperatures into the mid 30s and 25C in the evenings.

There are lots of walking trails running from Montreux, up the gorge towards Caux and the train service is (as you would expect) very comprehensive and easy to use, so you can access the region very easily. The tourisme office ( info@mvtourism.ch ) are very helpful and will supply maps and itineraries.

The programme for the main venues at the festival are now available from the website. This will give you all the main gigs at the Congress Centre. However, this only makes up about 20% of the festival...... and virtually everything else is free! The "under the sky" programmes will normally be online by mid June though very comprehensive information is available on a daily basis in Montreux during the festival.

If there is any other information you would like, let me know or drop me an email.
