They are both convenient to sites of interest with good public transport links. Vevey is flatter, which you may prefer.

Yes, that was also exactly my first thought NorthWestLondoner... Vevey is very easy to walk around because it is flat. Montreux is quite hilly - and although there are some escalators and elevators to get from the lake-side up to the train station and hotels, the walking is a bit more "up and down".

The other two major differences are size: Vevey is smaller and more compact, Montreux is larger; and character : Vevey is a large village - where you can walk along the lake in either direction to other villages - a bit more quaint, local, and down to earth. Whereas Montreux is really a large town, complete with most of the "touristic" services, including all the luxo shops and so on... Both are very well connected by public transportation (train, bus, boat), so this is not very much of an issue.

Both of them are very nice, so just choose the one that sounds most like where you want to be for your vacation.

Hope this helps.

I prefer Montreux but Vevey has its merits too especially for visitors with mobility issues.
