Driving in winter around Switzerland, Germany and Itay

Can anyone tell me what it is like driving around Switzerland, Germany and Italy during December and January. We will be in those countries during that time and are considering driving between the countries rather than flying. Are the roads prone to being icy etc? Thank you

Hi bevchris,

Have you thought about taking the trains? In Switzerland, they're convenient, on time, & fun; in Germany I found them to be convenient and fun too, if a tad less timely than in Switzerland.

Many of the places you'll want to go in Switzerland do not allow cars, and since the mountain passes will be closed, you'll be routed to the crowded & backed up tunnels.

I spent a month in an apartment in Mittenwald, Germany, in Dec 06-Jan 07, and didn't have a car. Didn't need one for anything!

You could save your rental for your time in Italy.

Anyway, if you want to research trains, take a look at www.rail.ch.

you should have no real problems. All major roads in Switzerland and Germany are salted (anti icing) and looked after very well. Rental cars normally come with snow tyres, so....if you drive normally, you will not encounter many problems.
