Amsterdam Suggestions?

We are taking a Tanzanian safari and will have a 24 hour layover going and returning in Amsterdam. Can anyone suggest single day & evening activities that are "Don't Miss"?

Cheers

The first thing that comes to mind is a canal boat tour. They depart from the docks very near to Centraal Station (the main train station). Most run about 60 mins. and are very reasonable (about 10-13 Euro per person). It's a lovely way to see the old city and get oriented while learning a bit about Amsterdam.

If you like museums, there are several great ones you could do in 1/2 a day or so. Jump online and see what suits your fancy.

Amsterdam is a fantastic city to walk or bike around. People watching is also great! I would plan at least one meal at a canalside restaurant/cafe where you can eat, people watch, and soak up the spirit of the city.

I agree with the canal tour recommendation but I would suggest you go to Boom Chicago on the Leidseplein where you can sign up for the tour done by the St. Nicolaas Boat Club. You can take whatever you like to drink/smoke/eat, the boats are very small so can navigate smaller canals, and it is not touristy at all.

Boom Chicago sucks. It's aimed at American zombies (tourists) who feel lost being away from their own country. What's the point of going abroad if all you do is to frequent places which reflect your lifestyle back home?

Go to the Melkweg: http://melkweg.nl/ located next to the Leidseplein which is the main party area in Amsterdam. Also Paradiso located nearby is a good scene: http://www.paradiso.nl/agenda.php

The canal trip is definitely worth the effort though: http://www.amsterdamcitytours.com/

The Sint Nicolaas Boat Club has nothing to do with Boom Chicago. Their sign up list is just located in that building. I have heard great reviews about that boat tour though. Just take a look at their website. http://www.amsterdamboatclub.com/ If you think you won't have enough time, just take one of the regular canal tours.

Most people try to squeeze in the Anne Frank Huis and either the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh museum. I could recommend the Anne Frank Huis. Pre-order your tickets and you will have another 1,5 hours to fill your day with.

Just walk trough the city and enjoy. You can walk trough the RLD or the Jordaan/9straatjes area.

@ asbhageloe, no offence, but you're not seriously suggesting somebody takes a virtual rowing boat with an outboard engine stuck on the back as the best way of taking a canal cruise are you?

It's not as if the normal canal cruises are expensive after all. They cost less than 10 Euros on average for a full hour's cruise with commentary and are wide open plan designs. See http://www.amsterdam.info/tours/canalcruise/ for more details.

I've taken both the big canal boat tour and the small boat tour and I much prefer the tour offered by the St. Nicolaas Boat Club. It is much more personal, casual, and just plain more fun.

I guess it all boils down to what a person is looking for in a tour.

If you don't want to go for the mass tourist stuff, I would recommend it indeed. If you rather have one of those bigger boats that look better, than don't go for the boat club. Which one you take doesn't matter. The city is lovely to see from the canals anyway.

My posting was more of a reply to yours about how boom chicago sucks. I merely pointed out that both organizations have nothing to do with each other.
