Buying Dutch prepaid SIM card before arriving in Amsterdam

I will need a prepaid SIM card for 2 weeks, to make a small number of phone calls and for some data roaming (maybe about 20MB) to check timetables etc. when we are on the move. We will be traveling from UK with Eurostar via Brussels. Will need phone on arrival in Amsterdam to coordinate accommodation. Can I buy a reasonably priced package before leaving UK, or at railway station in Brussels? Most of the local (Dutch) websites that I have checked will only mail to a Dutch address, so what options to I have?

Thanks,

It's a generic problem whilst travelling. And almost impossible to solve at lowest cost. Generic guideline is to do the first calls roaming on another SIM, but really as little as possible; no data traffic. Buy and activate a Dutch one a.s.a.p. once you are here.

But count your blessings: in most Western countries the purchased SIM's activate immediately. Compare that to e.g. a security-paranoid country like India where a prepaid SIM activates after first 20 sheets of red tape documents to deliver/copy and then a nice checking/activation period of, yes, 72 (...) hours :-)

All the best,

I dont think you can buy a Dutch sim card in Brussels. Using it in the Netherlands would already be roaming.

I would recommend to buy a sim card locally in Amsterdam. When you get out of the station you are in the middle of the city..

I would recommend going to a Vodafone store, buy a prepaid sim card. When you top-up with 10 EUR you can get 25 MB free internet, I believe you even get a free data bundle for the first week. Make sure you first sms (free) " internet aan" to 4000 before you top-up.

Pretty sure the people in the shop can help you

Cheers

Christianpeeters,

Thanks for your speedy response. I am not sure that I properly understood your final (and probably quite important!) comment: My understanding is that I should send an SMS to 4000 saying "internet aan" before topping up - is that correct?

Thanks

Yeah so when you have the Vodafone prepaid sim card.

Before you top-up with 10 EUR you first SMS/Text "Internet aan" to 4000.

By doing this you have activated a special tarif. When you top-up with 10 EUR you get 25 MB free internet when you top-up with 20 EUR or more you get 75 MB internet. But you need to have sent the SMS before the top-up!

You can read more about it here: I translated the page into English

I would recommend the prepaid sim card from http://www.prepaidzero.com as it had the most MB data and international calling included on the sim. It all worked fine for me.

DO NOT BUY LYCAMOBILE

lycamobile is the worst possible decision when you buy a prepaid sim card in the netherlands, because:

1. they have no online support (FAQ is NOT support)

2. their data plan is impossible to set up (it SOMETIMES sets up automatically the first time you try using the internet from your smartphone)

3. if you try changing smartphones it fouls up your settings and does not connect (yes my smartphones are all unblocked and work in italy, us, uk, france, spain, israel, brazil, etc)

4. the number they post on their website as a support number (1200) has a message saying (in dutch) that the number is not in service

buy LeBara or KPN if youwant good international rates with good data plan. Vodafone if you dont call outside europe much (expensive international) with a good and rather expensive data plan.

I agree with Gabri188590. I would also recommend http://www.prepaidzero.com since they deliver the sim cards worldwide for free. The stand-alone data plans are worth it if you just need to check timetables or email or maps and so on. You can get upto 35MB per day and the sim card is valid till you use up the data amount you paid for.

I had a very good experience with them. Their customer service is really great! I had ordered two sim cards (both of the 400MB plan) to India. The sim cards reached upto the Indian customs without a problem, but then there was some issue with the delivery within India. The prepaidzero team kept track of all this, updated me when needed, and finally even offered to send out replacement cards (to either India or my hotel in Europe) since mine had not yet arrived.

I would use their services again in a heartbeat!
