Nijmegen area with children - to do tips?

Hi,

I'm going to stay a week close to Nijmegen in two weeks. I've tried to look for interesting places that would be suitable for interesting for children (3,7,9) as well. We are going to visit Efteling for one day, but that definetely is the only amusement park trip.

Does someone have any practical tips on what to do with kids in the area? Suitable restaurants? Kid-frendly museums? Where do locals go with children?

Thanks for help,

Kalle

Hi there,

Arnhem for sure. Westerbouwing (nearby Oosterbeek, with small cable car); Burgers Zoo (best in the whole country) and Open Air museum.

All the best,

And another one, just reopening but for now weekends only:

museumparkorientalis.nl/en/…

A brilliant 'live' history museum, about foreign countries (esp. Middle East) as opposed to the also superior Arnhem one that displays old Dutch houses, crafts and even a working museum tram line.

All the best,

Hi Kalle

Something fun to do with your children is "Pannenkoekenboot" (Pancake Boat). Boating on the River Waal and typical Dutch pancakes! Starting point: Waalkade. Also nice is a smaller amusement park 7km of Nijmegen: Tivoli in Berg en Dal.

What about "the Lookout Rabbit" (Rabbit lookout) in the Valkhofpark. Very strange.. Or "Grenzland-Draisine", bicycle kick over an old railway from Groesbeek to Kranenburg in Germany. Plenty to do. Have fun!

I like to hear what it was like fot the kids, after your trip to Nijmegen.

Go to the 'Openluchtmuseum' in Arnhem if you want to learn more about the history of Holland. http://www.openluchtmuseum.nl/

There's a great Zoo called Burger's Zoo next to the museum. Should make up for one great full day.

Sorry I missed this but for future reference there is a mini attraction park at Berg en Dal

http://www.parktivoli.nl/

Nijmegen has 2 big playgrounds, Brakkefort for the younger kids

http://www.brakkefort.nl/index.html

and the leemkuil which is more openspaced&in the forest:

http://www.deleemkuil.nl/

(if anyone needs help translating please let me know)

Nearby Groesbeek has 3 fab museums

The liberation museum which is about Market Garden in WWII and general liberation of the netherlands:

www.bevrijdingsmuseum.nl

the above poster already gave the link for museumpark orentalis, that's the old biblical open air museum(the surrounding area is called the holy land foundation) but now focuses more on 3 religions, judism&the islam as well as christianity.

the 3rd museum is the Afrika museum:

www.afrikamuseum.nl/international/english.php

In Nijmegen don't forget the Labyrinth at the waalkade(towards the train bridge) children seem to like that.

If you want to go to the open air museum and the zoo make sure to get the combination tickets. They are a little bit cheaper and will give you 1x entry to each in the course of several days (7 days I believe).
